DANCE and MOVEMENT THERAPY

Dance/movement therapy (DMT) is defined by the American Dance Therapy Association as the use of movement as a medium for non-verbal communication and expression. It is a non-intrusive approach in encouraging individuals to express themselves, through simply using the body. By going back to the body, individuals are able to understand how their bodies relate to themselves, their environment, and those around them.

DMT is based on the assumption that body and mind are interrelated and is defined as the psychotherapeutic use of movement as a process that furthers the emotional, cognitive, and physical integration of the individual. Dance/movement therapy effects changes in feelings, cognition, physical functioning, and behavior (American Dance Therapy Association, 2014).

“It is the psychotherapeutic use of movement as a process which furthers the emotional, cognitive and physical integration of the individual.” (American Dance Therapy Association, 2014).

DMT addresses a range of behavioral, emotional, and other clinical issues using dance, movement, and counseling as the medium for therapy.

Some goals of Dance/Movement Therapy include:

  1. Body, mind and spirit integration

  2. Relatedness and socialization

  3. Increase body awareness

  4. Expand movement repertoire

  5. Develop self-confidence and self-identity
